Frequently Asked Questions
Script Development Camp
What is the Script Development Camp all about?
Script Development Programs are one of the final steps in our script adaptation process.
During a Script Development Program, students try out scenes, songs, and dances. They create choreography, blocking, writing, design ideas, and develop their own mini-adaptations.
Script Development Programs offer a different kind of creative outlet and challenge than our Performance Residencies. Sometimes, students’ ideas are incorporated into final production plans when the scripts become fully-realized performance residency programs!
The program culminates in a student-driven showcase of their creations throughout the week. The script development residency offers a different type of opportunity to both sponsoring organizations who may be seeking to offer multiple week-long opportunities in a year, or may already have a performance opportunity in place but want to expand their offerings.
So is it like putting on a play?
Compass Creative Dramatics' Script Development Program focuses on all of the elements that come together before actors ever enter the room -- the writing, the costume designs, the choreography. The Script Development Program does include a showcase performance, but it's different from "putting on a play". The showcase will include select scenes, songs, and dances, and each team member may play multiple parts (and each character may be played by more than one performer, depending on the scenes selected)!
Because the Script Development Program is all about developing a play and its elements, parts of a full production like physical costumes and set pieces aren't part of the showcase because the Script Development students will have an opportunity to show off their own design ideas!
What makes Compass Creative Dramatics special?
Script Development Camp offers a higher level of creative outlet and challenge than our Performance Camps. Sometimes, students’ ideas are incorporated into final production plans when the scripts become fully-realized performance residency programs!
The program culminates in a student-driven showcase of their creations throughout the week.

My child has never been in a play, is that okay?
Absolutely! This program is designed to be customized and flexible to suit a wide variety of ages, experience levels, and talents. This is a great way for your child to have a fantastic week-long immersion in theatre. We are able to adjust the teaching and guidance as well as the level of difficulty for each student, which means your child won't feel left out or look out of place, even if this is their first time!
My child is a veteran of the stage! Is this program still right for them?
Since this program is designed to be customized and flexible to suit a wide variety of ages, experience, and talents, we are able to adjust the teaching and guidance as well as the level of difficulty for each student, which means even if you have a budding star on your hands, we'll be glad to help nurture them, challenge them to further growth, and give them another wonderful theatrical experience.
Is this a professional training program?
While we welcome students with professional aspirations, and are so pleased to see our students go on to complete professional theatre, commercial, and film work, our focus as an educational program is on developing personality skills or soft skills like responsibility, respect, trust, teamwork, and empathy through the experience of being a theatre artist during camp.
If my child is not available for the entire week or would need to miss the showcase, can they still enroll?
We understand you and your child are both busy individuals and have outside commitments; however, because of the very collaborative nature of the program, students are not excused from rehearsals or the showcase.

What does my student need for camp each day?
- A snack. We will be taking a short break partway through our day. If your student would like a quick snack that can be consumed in a 5-10 min break (i.e. granola bar, grapes, string cheese), he or she is more than welcome to bring a snack for this break.
- A water bottle. It is important that the students are able to stay-well hydrated during rehearsal.
- Comfortable clothes. We will be up moving and dancing a lot and it is important that campers dress accordingly. We also request for campers' safety that they only wear shoes with closed toes and heel. Gym shoes or dance shoes are great! No snow boots or sandals of any kind - please bring a change of shoes if necessary.
